D&D and LEGO Unveil New Gelatinous Cube as Crossover Expands
It looks like that D&D and LEGO crossover series is going to be bigger than anyone expected. From Gelatinous Cubes to minifigs and more!
D&D and LEGO seem like a match made in heaven. After all, they’re both ostensibly about the boundless creativity of the imagination but, in actuality, are about seeing the weirdest and most spectacular things you can make with the limited pieces you’re given. And the ultimate creations are often things the creators never explicitly intended.
Earlier this month, D&D Beyond revealed some of WotC’s plans for the year-long 50th anniversary celebration. Among the many details, which include new adventures and a new edition of the rules, were plenty of new partnerships and a thank you video that echoes everyone congratulating Shinji.
The new partnerships with Pop-Tarts are not surprising, given that they teamed up with Magic, Converse, and LEGO last year.
Now we’ve known for a while now that LEGO has a D&D set coming up. Last year there was a LEGO Ideas contest where fans could vote for their favorite D&D-themed LEGO creation. The winning model is pictured below. That’s coming. But recently, it seems like there’s more to the D&D and LEGO crossover in the works than was previously expected.
D&D and LEGO – A Bigger Crossover Than Expected!
In the D&D Beyond post, WotC mentions “a LEGO building set complete with minifigures.” Which may well have been everything. However, there seems to be more than meets the eye in the minifigures. At least according to rumors uncovered by the Brick Tap, which state that there will be a whole set of D&D Collectible Minifigures with figures for NPCs like Strahd and the Lady of Pain as well as more specific D&D heroes like Tieflings and Githyanki and Dragonborn.
And today, the official LEGO Twitter account revealed a new Gelatinous Cube while teasing even more to come. It’s something straight out of the Monster Manual.
“Time to party up. We’re oozing with anticipation! Are you ready to build awesome adventures? #LEGODnD”
Now, we don’t know if this is part of the LEGO Ideas D&D set, which, if you believe rumors from last month, has been significantly upscaled from the original design, weighing in at $359.99 with 3,745 pieces. It’s set to release in April 2024.
Time alone will say that the Gelatinous Cube is a part of the new LEGO Ideas set or something else. But it does seem to lend credence to these rumors, especially since the upscaled design may well have room for a Gelatinous Cube in its dungeon. Either way, it seems like the crossover is bigger than was originally expected. Now, to figure out which miniatures you’ll play with, classic or LEGO.
