The first-ever LEGO D&D adventure is at hand, featuring black puddings, beholder cats, and some surprisingly deadly encounters.

As anyone who’s played any of the LEGO video games, be they Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or Bionicle: Maze of Shadows can tell you, just because the world is made out of LEGO bricks doesn’t mean you’re in for a cakewalk. Beneath the humor and the scattering LEGO pieces that fly out of enemies like confetti lurks some fun platforming that may well challenge you. Sure it’s not LEGO Bloodborne (though, hey, The LEGO Group, if you’re reading…), but the point is, the games still take themselves seriously as games..

I mention this because today, the official LEGO and D&D crossover adventure is out on D&D Beyond. Red Dragon’s Tale: A LEGO Adventure features the world of D&D in an imagined LEGO style, yes. But it is also an adventure you shouldn’t undertake lightly.

Red Dragon’s Tale: A LEGO Adventure – Hit the Bricks in D&D

Red Dragon’s Tale: A LEGO Adventure does exactly what you’d hope. It is a short adventure, but not necessarily a one shot, depending on how your group plays. I expect that most folks will want an either extra long session or to try and two-shot this one. Especially since you’ll want to bask in the LEGO-yness of the world.

The adventure starts off, as many good D&D adventures do, in a tavern. There, owing to the schemes of a nefarious sorcerer, the player characters are swept up in the affairs of Cinderhowl, the titular red dragon, whose tale this is.

But before you get into the adventure itself, there are plenty of opportunities for the players to interact with the LEGO world, including sampling some free hot wings, investigating some rumors of a missing cat, and more “typical D&D stuff” that is given the LEGO treatment with a bit of humor.

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the adventure, but suffice it to say, you’ll encounter a variety of LEGO monsters, including a LEGO Owlbear, Gelatinous Cube, and more. There’s a ton of fun LEGO artwork scattered throughout the adventure but be warned: the closer you get to the end, the deadlier the adventure gets—to the unprepared. An inexperienced GM running this might not be able to give players the cues they need to realize when things are going badly.

But, otherwise, this looks like a pretty solid adventure that is more than just crossover fodder. And hey, it’s free, and it’s hard to argue with that price.

Red Dragon’s Tale is just one piece of the ongoing LEGO crossover. There’s also the Red Dragon’s Tale LEGO set that will set you back 359 big ones and 99 little ones, as well as a handful of other D&D Beyond LEGO goodies, like LEGO dice, custom frames, and new backdrops that you can use with D&D Beyond. When you claim your free LEGO adventure, you unlock all of them, so get to it.

Just watch out for LEGO Batman; there’s no telling where he’ll show up.
