Jason Momoa Should Have Been Lobo (and Other Wild Things Happening at DC Films)
James Gunn and Peter Safran are gearing up for the big DCEU pitch, and there are some radical rumors about the future of DC Films.
It’s been a breakneck ride for those of us watching the Warner Brothers Discovery merger. First, DC Films started making drastic cuts, including the nearly-completed production of Batgirl. Other projects were canceled as well, while the big questions remained.
What is the future of the DC films universe?
A form of an answer came a few weeks ago when superstar producer of The Suicide Squad and HBO’s Peacemaker series James Gunn and Aquaman producer Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Films. News is popping up everywhere about the future plans of DC – and today, some leaked news could point to Gunn and Safran’s plans for the future of some of our favorite characters.

Snyder’s DC Universe is Super-Dead
Just ahead of a major meeting with the CEO of Warner-Disc. (David Zaslav), Gunn and Safran are looking to give DC Films a fresh new start. Like, a clean slate start. According to a Hollywood Reporter source, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 has been canceled. Meanwhile, after all of the excitement, reports are suggesting that there may not be more solo Man of Steel films featuring Henry Cavill.

Interestingly, there are no rumors surrounding Ezra Miller’s role as Barry Allen in The Flash. But with all of the controversy surrounding the actor, scrapping that part of Zach Snyder’s DCEU would be a convenient solution to that drama.
From Aquaman to the Main Man?
Among the rumors about this very big meeting are some interesting and exciting possibilities for Aquaman star Jason Momoa. According to THR, Momoa’s Aquaman character will have his final big show in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But he could reappear on screen in a Lobo movie?!
Comic book and animation fans will know Lobo as the universal bounty hunter with a heavy metal biker sensibility a la 90s comics. And honestly, we all know that Jason Momoa should have been cast in this role from the get-go. It’s too good a fit. If this is the direction DC Films’ new bosses are going, I wholeheartedly approve.
The DCEU Wasn’t Fast Enough
As for those fans who are mourning their losses, my (mostly unironic) condolences. As dearly upsetting as Wonder Woman 1984 turned out to be, I appreciated many aspects of that version of Wonder Woman. Likewise, Cavill had the potential to be a stellar Superman, even if his scripts didn’t close that loop. And unfortunately, Warner Brothers took a long time to get its universe in order, putting some actors in danger of aging out of the role (or just moving on to other things).
Whether this announcement means we can expect news of younger versions of our favorite heroes or a DCEU that finally focuses on some new characters (like Lobo and Peacemaker, for example), only time will tell.
