MTG: Tree Huggers – Top Druid Commanders
These Commanders might not be the Lorax, but they still speak for the trees. Disrespect them, and they’ll break both your knees.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.
Druids are nature mages, and they’re all about making your lands do more. They’re usually Green, though sometimes they’ll throw in a little of the other colors, depending on where they’re from. However, one thing is universal: if a Druid is leading your deck, you’ll get mana faster than any of your friends.
Your big question is what to do with all that mana. Whether you summon the biggest beasties or unleash massive spells is entirely up to you. Nature’s wrath is at your fingertips: don’t drop it.
Seton, Krosan Protector
One of the unfortunates tempted by the Mirari, Seton is nonetheless an awesome Commander. He hands out a quasi-mana ability to all your Druids and gives you fast mana right out of the gate. He isn’t the strongest fighter, but he doesn’t really need to be. Once you have enough Druids on the field, you’ll be able to summon the REAL monsters of the forest.
Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss
Move over, Pumba, this is the REAL Mr. Pig. Raggadragga makes all your Druids with mana abilities (which is most of them) bigger, and he can turn one of your critters into an absolute Mack Truck. Cast all your big mana spells and then run over any survivors with a 10/10 Werebear with trample.
Chulane, Teller of Tales
Every Druid loves mana, but they don’t all make it themselves. Chulane lets you play extra lands every time you cast a creature and is happy to put them back in the storybook to let you do it again. Pack his deck with ETBs and either a Panharmonican or Elesh Norn (or both) and unleash a tidal wave of effects.
Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer
Rocco is an amazing Commander, especially if you hold off casting him for a bit. Once he hits the field, as long as you didn’t cheat him out, he brings along a friend. With enough mana, that friend could be Ghalta, Craterhoof, or even a Gishath.
Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury
One of my absolute favorite Planeswalkers and an amazing Commander, Freyalise comes loaded with creature generation. All of her abilities are great, but you’ll likely only be using her first two. Once you’ve generated a few Druids to generate big mana, you can drop massive creatures or a Finale of Devastation for the win.

What is Commander?
For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.
