These Nature RPGs and Accessories Are in Full Bloom
Spring has sprung, and so have these tabletop RPGs, games, and accessories celebrating everything we love about nature.
It’s getting downright nice outside. After a mixed bag of a winter, and a yoyo of an early-spring, it finally seems like we’re getting into spring showers, greenery, and the return of flowers… and allergies. But you win some you lose some, right? These nature centered games and accessories will keep those good spring time feelings going. Even if you have to spend more time indoors hiding from pollen.
1. Mouse Guard
Something I really enjoy about this time of year is watching all of the little animals return to my yard. And yes, that includes the ‘pest’ critters like mice, too. Based on the beautifully illustrated series of the same name by David Petersen, Mouse Guard is a little like D&D… but on a much smaller scale. Like, the sort of scale where the heroes are just a few inches tall and snakes are equivalent to dragons.
2. Wanderhome
Another tabletop RPG, Wanderhome is a little less like your standard D&D style adventure and has more of a Studio Ghibli feel. Are there adventures to be taken? Sure. But there are also fields to lay around in, personal growth to pursue, and friendships to form. This is a game that focuses on the quiet thrill of exploration and finding your own belonging.
3. The Perfect Dice for the Job
If we’re talking about dice that celebrate the awesomeness of nature, these may be my favorites yet. They look like tiny little forested mountains above the cloud-line. These dice are where secret monk temples should be. Or where only the bravest and truest-of-heart explorers are allowed. And they’re perfect for any game or character who’s very in touch with nature.
4. Living Forest
Looking at other kinds of games, Living Forest is a strategy board game. Each player is a nature spirit trying to protect the forest with the help of the guardian animals. It’s a very pretty game, also with some heavy Ghibli vibes- because like… we’ve all seen Totoro and Princess Mononoke, right? There’s a wide variety of game mechanics to choose from and combo, which means there are almost endless ways to play and win this game.
5. Ecosystem
A little the same, but also very different, Ecosystem is a card game that’s mean to be educational. Build sustainable environments for your various animals that will allow them to flourish. This game reminds me of the exact feeling of getting home from school to a new Zoobook or Wildlife Fact File that I would then study and nearly memorize before putting it safely in its spot in the binder. I was a kid with a ton of animal fun facts.
