Vantage is an upcoming game inspired by Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But there’s no campaign here; it’s just open exploration.

Vantage seems like a very ambitious game. Granted, Stonemaier Games are no strangers to ambitious games. It promises open-world exploration, roguelike elements, sandbox discovery, and more. But one thing it is assuredly not is a campaign game, nor does it have a randomly generated world. So how will this game even work exactly?

Vantage Overview

If you’ve played games like 7th Continent, you probably have a good idea of how Vantage will work at a fundamental level. This isn’t just my assumption. The official Facebook page admits 7th Continent as a source of inspiration. Similarly, they claim The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as another spark of early inspiration.

Right now, we have a lot of information about rules concepts and design theory about Vantage, but not much in the way of gameplay mechanics. But we do have some basic information about how the players will explore the planet. Rather than miniatures, you are your character, and you see through their eyes. Using large cards held in a holder, you’ll see what your character sees and what cards you will find if you move in any of the cardinal directions.

It’s currently planned for launch in 2025, so there is still plenty of time for more information to be released as we approach the new year. As someone who loves open-world board games like Mage Knight and Skyrim, I’m very invested in learning about Vantage.

Vantage is an open-world, cooperative, roguelike adventure game for 1-6 players designed by Jamey Stegmaier. Vantage features an entire planet to explore, with players communicating while scattered across the world. With nearly 800 interconnected locations on cards and over 900 other discoverable cards, the world is your sandbox.

You begin each game of Vantage on an intergalactic vessel heading towards an uncharted planet. After crashing far from your companions, you have complete freedom as to how you explore, discover, and interact with the planet. You view your location from a first-person perspective–you can communicate with and support other players, but you are separated by vast distances, so only you can see your current location.

Vantage is not a campaign game, and it is completely self-contained (no expansions, just a few accessories like metal coins). Details about Vantage will be revealed here and to subscribers leading up to its 2025 launch on the Stonemaier webstore and the retail release soon after.
